Secondary Level
The goal of the Secondary Level is to support young adults during the critical period of adolescence. For optimal development during this period, students have a close, supportive peer group and a mentoring relationship with their teacher.
The Montessori educational approach continues at the Secondary Level. Traditional textbooks and other academic sources are used as supplemental materials. Art, music, drama, and materials for self-expression continue to be important in the Montessori environment. To facilitate the transition to high school, students have experience taking tests and completing assignments within a specified time frame. Students in this program complete academic goals that are consistent with the accepted educational standards nationwide for this age level.
In addition, students explore the society of work and service to the community by participating in hands on experiences. During the year, the students spend approximately five to six weeks off-campus on both day and overnight trips. They explore the cultural and educational facilities unique to the Chicago area, as well as out-of-state wilderness areas and national parks.
Forest Bluff students who are approximately 12 years old are admitted to this two-year program based on their level of maturity and capacity to benefit from the exceptional opportunities that the Secondary Level offers.
